pavement musings

on that newly laid pavement
an unset tile tilted-
I found myself on ground
almost nose to nose with the cobbler

scent of used leather, shoe glue
touched my horizon
I saw lights filtering from tattered tarp
all other lights vanished

I took stock of my surroundings
my shoe broken now,
I offered it to him soundlessly
as he repaired it, he said,

“now you can walk to the end of the world”
